West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo apologised to the club’s supporters after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Charlton in the Championship.
The Hammers were beaten at the London Stadium as Taty Castellanos spurned a late chance to equalise from the penalty spot.
“We cannot thank the fans enough,” Espirito Santo said after the game.
“It’s disappointing but it’s us who failed today. It was us. We failed them. We should apologise.
“But I humbly ask for them to believe and keep supporting like they are doing.”
The Hammers manager was particularly frustrated by West Ham’s defending for Charlton’s opening goal and their lack of composure in the final third.
“I’m disappointed. It’s not about the way we played, it’s about the situations in the box,” he added.
“We didn’t defend the throw in properly [that led to Jones’ opening goal], we didn’t create enough in the offensive box.
“We created a lot of situations but this is football, and we have to be more precise in the boxes.
“I didn’t know exactly the number of shots [we had] but we created a lot of situations but weren’t able to take them today.”
