‘Where we had imagined bridges, a wall has gone up’ – RC Lens’s general manager on the reasons behind Dino Toppmöller’s departure | OneFootball

The news of the split between RC Lens and their manager Dino Toppmöller will undoubtedly remain one of the most memorable stories of the early stages of the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season. Not necessarily because the German, who has since been replaced by his assistant Yannick Cahuzac, had made a particularly strong impression, but mainly because he ultimately did not have time to do so. Three months, six matches, one trophy, and the story of a revival had already come to an end.

And whilst the reasons for this split had remained rather vague until then – based on journalistic speculation – Lens’s managing director, Benjamin Parrot, took it upon himself on Thursday to explain them to the press. And he did so quite simply. For in his view, the partnership between the northern club and Toppmöller quite simply “didn’t work out”.

“Even before the Trophée des Champions, we sensed that there were two camps within the coaching staff – one from Lens and one from abroad,” the club official explained. “Where we had hoped to build bridges, a wall had gone up. We put a whole host of measures in place to bring everyone closer together: a statement from Jean-Louis (Leca, the sporting director), meetings… but this lack of connection was having an impact on the team.”

“We therefore had to act responsibly and make a decision. It may have been perceived as interference in sporting matters, but no, it was a management decision aimed at bringing everyone closer together. The coach did not accept this decision. We had to take responsibility.”

Standing alongside Parrot, Jean-Louis Leca for his part made a point of paying tribute to Toppmöller as “an extraordinary man, a good coach”, recalling that “we were convinced back in June that this was the right choice, that we could bring something extra to the table. It didn’t work out.”
