Leeds United are closing on the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, 29, having agreed personal terms ahead of an £8.2m switch to Elland Road. According to Leedsunited.news, he is expected to arrive as Sebastiaan Bornauw’s replacement, with Bornauw heading to Hamburg.
Signed from FC Zurich as a teenager in 2015, Elvedi has stayed more than a decade at Gladbach and made 364 appearances. He is into the final year of his contract and has earned 73 Switzerland caps.
He featured 34 times under Daniel Farke during the 2022-23 season at Gladbach. Farke described him then as a composed, experienced defender with high-quality distribution under pressure that helps construct play from the back.
Despite being 29, he has been in Switzerland squads for five major tournaments, starting with Russia in 2018, comprising three World Cups and two European Championships. He also has Champions League experience.
Elvedi is widely regarded as a reliable ball-playing centre-back whose standout trait is progressive passing from deep. He regularly ranks near the top for pass accuracy in Europe, often returning 90% to 95%.
He is also a twin, with brother Jan Elvedi a centre-back at Kaiserslautern in Germany’s second tier.
