Denis Cheryshev remains the last Villarreal player to score at a World Cup, a breakthrough star at Russia 2018.

El Periódico Mediterráneo notes that the winger stepped off the bench in the opener against Saudi Arabia after Alan Dzagoev’s injury and struck twice in Russia’s 5-0 win, one a stunning finish.

He scored again in the 3-1 victory over Egypt, taking his tally to three in two matches and announcing himself as one of the tournament’s surprises.

His final flourish arrived in the quarter-final with Croatia, a fierce left-footer from outside the box that put the hosts ahead. Russia were later knocked out on penalties despite his opener.

Cheryshev finished with four goals, level with Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann and Romelu Lukaku, and behind Golden Boot winner Harry Kane on six.

Russia 2018 also featured strong Villarreal representation, with five players involved: Cheryshev, Antonio Rukavina, Carlos Bacca, Salem Al Dawsari and Alfred N’Diaye. Only Cheryshev and Salem found the net.

No Villarreal player has scored at a World Cup since. That thunderous effort on seven July 2018 remains the club’s last on this stage.
