Why Arsenal is no longer producing goalkeepers?

One position where Arsenal have rarely had a homegrown player for a long time is goalkeeper, and that situation baffles Graham Stack, who was developed at the club but never managed to break into the first team. The former Arsenal goalkeeper has questioned why the club have struggled to produce players capable of progressing through the ranks and eventually becoming part of the senior squad.

Arsenal’s academy has produced several promising goalkeepers, while the club have also invested heavily in young talent for the position in recent seasons. However, there is no guarantee that any of those players will eventually become the club’s next number one, despite that being an outcome the Gunners would clearly welcome.

Arsenal Continue to Sign Goalkeepers

Mikel Arteta has placed significant importance on having established, high-quality goalkeepers, which has made opportunities for academy players more difficult to secure. David Raya has demonstrated the importance of having a reliable goalkeeper, and Arsenal continue to prioritise quality throughout their squad as they compete at the highest level.

That approach has made it difficult for young players from the academy and youth teams to receive opportunities, particularly in goal. While Arsenal have continued to develop young goalkeepers, the pathway towards the senior team remains unclear, with established options regularly preferred.

Stack believes the club should be producing more goalkeepers capable of progressing through the ranks. He questioned why Arsenal continue to sign players for the position instead of creating opportunities for their academy prospects.

Stack Questions Academy Pathway

He said via the Metro:

‘What are they doing at the club that they’re not producing any goalies? They just keep signing goalies.

‘At what point is there going to be an Arsenal goalkeeper that’s going to, not even break through, but I’m talking about being a number three.’

Stack’s comments highlight the difficulty academy goalkeepers face when attempting to establish themselves at Arsenal. Even reaching the position of third choice goalkeeper would represent significant progress for a player developed within the club’s system, yet Stack believes that opportunity has been difficult to achieve.

Arsenal’s commitment to signing experienced goalkeepers has helped maintain competition and quality in the position, but it has also raised questions about the pathway available to their young players. For Stack, the lack of a homegrown goalkeeper progressing into even a squad role remains a concern.
