That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have this weekend provided an insight into the situation.
Barcelona were scheduled to play out a friendly fixture late this week, against Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan.
The matchup was pencilled in to take place in the African country of Libya.
In the buildup to the trip, however, the Blaugrana announced their decision to withdraw.
This came as a result of ‘security concerns over renewed outbreaks of violence and the threat of civil war in the country, despite a ceasefire being in place since 2020’.
Atlético Madrid in turn replaced Barca in the fixture, putting Inter Milan to the sword by way of a penalty shootout on Friday night.
And as alluded to above, Joan Laporta and co. were as a result forced to return a welcome boost on the monetary front.
The Camp Nou brass were afforded a €5 million payment for agreeing to face Inter, one which they reluctantly sent back after making the call not to participate.
