We outline why Huddersfield Town are keen on Ruben Selles as they continue to search for a new manager.
Huddersfield Town are on the lookout for a new head coach after enduring a miserable season in League One as they missed out on the play-off places.
After a disappointing relegation, there was an expectation that the Terriers would bounce back, with Michael Duff supported in the market following his appointment last summer.
However, things didn’t go to plan, with Duff dismissed in March, but the team continued to struggle, and they ultimately finished 10th in the table.
Now, attention has turned to finding a long-term successor to Duff, and it has been claimed that the club are in talks with Ruben Selles.
The 41-year-old is out of work since he was surprisingly sacked by Hull City despite keeping them in the Championship after arriving in December.
With Selles having previously impressed with Reading, many would see this as a real coup for Huddersfield, and here we outline THREE reasons why the Yorkshire side are likely to be keen on the Spaniard…
Firstly, and most importantly, Selles is a very good coach.
He was managing Reading in hugely challenging circumstances, but he handled himself with class, and he overachieved massively, even with no backing at all in the market.
Selles proved he could develop younger players, and he is tactically smart. Plus, given his age, he is a young coach, and he would be able to build a long-term project at Huddersfield as they look to kick-on.
With Championship experience on his CV, along with coaching in the Premier League, you could argue Selles should be aiming higher than Huddersfield, so if they could convince him to join, it would be outstanding for the club.
As mentioned, Selles’ time in League One is also a positive, as it means he knows exactly what he is walking into.
Let’s be clear, the aim for Huddersfield next season is to win promotion, and whilst that doesn’t mean you should exclude any candidates that don’t have experience in the third tier, it obviously is a benefit.
Selles would be able to recruit players to suit his system, and he has shown he can get results, so with more support on transfers, he would be able to build a team that can get the results the club wants, along with playing football in a stylish way.
Finally, owner Kevin Nagle isn’t a popular figure among the fans right now, and it’s easy to see why, as he has made plenty of mistakes, particularly in the past 12 months.
Whilst he can’t make an appointment to appease the fans, he could do with bringing in a figure that unites the supporters and brings everyone together - and Selles would do just that.
It would show serious ambition, and Selles has the profile to galvanise the club and ensure everyone is all pulling in the same direction.
