Real Sociedad are widely known as the txuri-urdin. The Basque term reflects the club’s blue and white identity, seen in the vertical stripes of their traditional home shirt.

According to AS, txuri means white and urdin means blue in Basque, the official language in the Basque Country. The nickname now applies to the team and their supporters.

The moniker is reinforced by the club anthem, titled Txuri-urdin, played before every match at the Reale Arena and sung a cappella by fans. It was composed and written in Basque in 1970 by composer Ricardo Sabadie at the request of then president José Luis Orbegozo.

Under Orbegozo, Real Sociedad won the two league titles in the club’s history, which helped the nickname stick even more.

Blue and white are also the colours of the San Sebastián flag, aligning the team with the city they represent, the capital of the province of Gipuzkoa. That helps explain the enduring use of the txuri-urdin palette wherever they play.
