Wigan Athletic manager Ryan Lowe has pointed out some of the biggest challenges new Luton Town boss Jack Wilshere will face
Wigan Athletic manager Ryan Lowe has highlighted what he believes new Luton Town boss Jack Wilshere’s toughest task will be as he prepares to step into his first ever full-time role as a manager.
The Hatters recently selected Wilshere as the man to lead them forward throughout the rest of the 2025/26 campaign, after parting ways with previous boss Matt Bloomfield.
Luton have experienced some massive highs and devastating lows over the past couple of years, after achieving promotion to the Premier League in 2023. Rob Edwards’ side put up a strong fight against relegation but ultimately suffered relegation straight back down to the Championship.
Form didn’t improve from there for the Kenilworth Road outfit, which led to Edwards being dismissed in January 2025. Bloomfield was given the task of keeping Luton in the second-tier but couldn’t succeed.
He was afforded the opportunity of leading the Hatters forward in League One, but after an uninspiring start to the campaign, was relieved of his duties at Kenilworth Road.
Wilshere has now been selected as the man to turn Luton’s fortunes around, in what is his first full-time job as a first-team manager in professional football.
The former Arsenal midfielder took his very first steps in the game in Luton Town’s Centre of Excellence, before joining the Gunners when he was nine.
With this tough task ahead of him, current Wigan Athletic boss Lowe has pointed out what the 33-year-old’s biggest struggles will be.
Lowe began his managerial career in 2018 with Bury, the club he was playing for at the time and led them to promotion from League Two.
From there, the former striker took charge of Plymouth Argyle, whom he also guided to promotion from the fourth-tier in 2020.
This earned him a job in charge of Preston North End, where he remained until 2024, before deciding to exit his role after a single game of last season.
In March 2025, Lowe was appointed as Wigan Athletic’s new manager, where he remains now. Amid Wilshere’s recent appointment, the Latics’ boss had some key advice for the young coach taking his maiden role as a first-team manager.
“The biggest thing for Jack will be to adapt in this division,” stated Lowe via Sky Sports Football.
“He’s been in the Championship, he’s had a little bit of coaching experience at Norwich, but League One is a different animal.
“He will come up against different teams, different personnel, they won’t all be able to play the way he will be wanting to play.
“As a young coach, the biggest thing for him will be learning to adapt to different things. I’m sure he will. He’s got all the credentials to be a good coach, it’s a fantastic opportunity to take them (Luton) back into the Championship and a fantastic club.
“We wish him all the best – until he comes to the Brick Community Stadium”
Wilshere arrives at Luton Town with much promise, due to the vast amount of time he has spent in close company with managers such as Arsene Wenger and Mikel Arteta.
These giants of the coaching game will no doubt have had a strong influence on how the 33-year-old wants his team to play, but as Lowe eluded to, Wilshere will have some tough learnings during his first term with the Hatters.
Coming up against managers who were leading dressing rooms before Wilshere even began his professional career, there will no doubt be scenarios where Luton’s coach is outsmarted on the touchline.
