Thibaut Courtois's legacy at Atlético Madrid is set to be officially erased. The Belgian goalkeeper, who once starred for the club and even had a commemorative plaque in his honor, became a figure of intense scorn among the fanbase after his controversial departure to arch-rivals Real Madrid.
That bitterness is now being formalized. According to Marca, club members are set to vote by January 5th on the twenty names to be honored with plaques at the Metropolitano stadium. Courtois will not be on that list, failing to meet the criteria for inclusion. As a result, his current plaque is to be removed—a symbolic act that merely finalizes what fans have expressed for years. In the past, supporters routinely vandalized the tribute whenever Courtois returned to play against Atlético with Real Madrid.
This move to sever historical ties comes as the club looks firmly to the future. The board remains focused on securing a new contract for their Argentine manager, seeing him as the central figure for both the present and future of the team.
In other squad news, a departure seems imminent: 30-year-old Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth is reportedly poised to leave Atlético Madrid for a move to Turkish side Fenerbahçe in the upcoming winter transfer window.
