Willian Arão condemned Santos’s display after a 3-0 defeat to Palmeiras at Nubank Parque in the Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg on Wednesday, saying the team fell short of the club’s standards.
According to Globo.com, the midfielder said the side must address errors and attitude before Sunday’s derby at Corinthians in the 25th round of the Brasileirão at Neo Química Arena, kick-off 16:00 Brasília time.
He accepted they played very badly, said there was only one chance from a set piece he was involved in, admitted Palmeiras were superior and could have scored more, and added that hard work is required to improve.
The result leaves Santos in trouble in the cup, they must win by three to force penalties, and need a margin of four or more to progress in normal time. The return is at Vila Belmiro on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time.
There is an expectation Santos could have attacking midfielder Neymar available for the second leg. He was named by coach Cuca for the game at Nubank Parque, then withdrawn to be preserved with the run of fixtures in mind.
