Santos will be without Willian Arão for Saturday’s 28th round match at Remo in the Campeonato Brasileiro, 18:30 in Belém, due to internal oblique abdominal pain.
The club said he first felt the issue during last week’s Copa Sudamericana quarter-final first leg against Atlético-MG at Vila Belmiro, and it persisted before worsening after the second meeting on Wednesday, 16, in Belo Horizonte.
As a result, he did not travel with the squad to Belém. He returned on Thursday, 17, to the Baixada Santista for assessment and continued treatment at the CT Rei Pelé.
Between those ties, he played in the 2-1 win over Cruzeiro in the league, showed discomfort in the area and asked to remain on when a substitution was planned.
With the score at 2-0 he received treatment and continued, and soon after Cruzeiro scored. He felt pain again but stayed on because Santos had used all five substitutions.
In his absence, the centre-back pairing is likely to be Lucas Veríssimo and Luan Peres against Remo, with João Ananias an option.
Arão has recently been used by Cuca at centre-back in both the Brasileiro and the Sudamericana. Santos have been eliminated by Atlético-MG in the Sudamericana and now have only the league to play, with 12 matches remaining this season.
