Despite rumors to the contrary, it appears as if VfL Wolfsburg have no plans to replace head coach Paul Simonis. Sunday’s Bundesliga defeat against promoted outfit 1. FC Köln hasn’t shifted the calculus at Germany’s green company team. A 2-3 away loss to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim serves as Wolfsburg’s fifth league defeat through nine matchdays this year, but everyone associated with the club is preparing to move forward together.

“Confidence isn’t at its highest point during phases like this,” Wolfsburg sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz remarked in the mixed zone last night. “But we have to stick together, work hard and keep going. We will tackle this together. We will take the positives with us and head into the next game [against Werder Bremen] together.

At the moment, it feels as everything coming our way is dangerous,” VfL squad captain Maximilian Arnold added whilst speaking to German broadcaster DAZN. “But we’ve had very intense and good exchanges [with the coach]. I have the feeling that he still reaches the team.

This is a difficult time,” Simonis himself added at the post-match press conference. “I had an easier season last year [his rookie season as a coach with the Deventer Go Ahead Eagles in which he won the Dutch cup]. As my colleague [Hoffenheim head coach Christian Ilzer sitting next to him at the press conference] said, one learns a lot from hard times.

I’m hoping that we can pull together and show a reaction,” Simonis continued. “I won’t stop believing and I won’t stop working the problem. I can only focus on making the next step. That’s Bremen and we will tackle that together.
