Wolves late show at Doncaster highlights Chirewa, Lopez, Doyle and Abbey | OneFootball

Wolves stepped up their pre-season with a 2-0 win at Doncaster, sealed by two late goals that showcased several squad contenders.

As reported by ExpressAndStar.com, Cesar Peixoto started with fringe first-teamers and academy players before introducing a stronger second-half XI. In the 82nd minute Wolves punished a defensive error, Andre found Fer Lopez, who swept in off the post, before Tawanda Chirewa won and converted a penalty after beating the goalkeeper to a rebound.

Chirewa, 22, has likely featured more because Wolves are waiting on World Cup returnees, filling in as a makeshift striker and at 10. After earlier misses this summer, he broke his duck here and led the line smartly, linking well with Lopez. Three loans have been difficult and his future next season may lie away from Molineux, but he is doing himself credit.

Lopez’s cameo underlined why there is hype around him. After playing a behind-closed-doors game with Estoril, a minor groin issue kept him out against Maidenhead and Real Sociedad, so this was the first chance fans had to see him this summer, and his technique, vision and creativity could be central to Peixoto’s system.

It has been a positive summer for Tommy Doyle, who appears to have played his way into Peixoto’s plans. Wolves still want a midfielder after Joao Gomes’ departure and, while Doyle may not start, he pressed aggressively again and, after a one-two with Adam Armstrong, threaded a superb pass for Tom Edozie, who should have scored.

Sixteen-year-old Jerome Abbey was handed a start despite limited pre-season minutes, having become Wolves’ youngest ever Premier League player with his debut at Burnley last season. Tasked with replacing Andre as the lone number six, he showed composure against seasoned opponents and calm use of the ball. Wolves cannot rely on a 16-year-old if Andre is absent next season, but Abbey earned plaudits and is one to watch.
