Wolves’ summer plans slowed by EFL squad rules and goalkeeper logjam | OneFootball

With three weeks left of the window, Wolves’ business is being checked by EFL squad rules and an overcrowded goalkeeping department. The team retains plenty of quality under Cesar Peixoto, but key areas still need work.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, EFL rules require eight homegrown players in the 25-man squad, seven in each 20-strong matchday squad, and one club developed player.

Wolves can meet those categories and could target homegrown additions or Premier League loans, but they currently have too many non-homegrown players. As it stands, some seniors risk missing the registered squad unless numbers are trimmed. The point was underlined when Boubacar Traore missed the Carabao Cup tie at Port Vale, with 16-year-old Jerome Abbey included instead.

Peixoto and the club expect changes before the deadline, although much depends on outgoings creating space for arrivals. Goalkeeper is a priority, yet adding one is unrealistic while Dan Bentley, Sam Johnstone and Jose Sa remain contracted.

The plan has been for Johnstone and Sa to depart and a new number one to arrive, but there has been little interest, particularly in Sa, which is why he was on the bench on Friday.

Sales and signings are anticipated, with needs in goal, midfield and wide attack. The hierarchy have long known the EFL rules and expected relegation, so this should not be an excuse. There is work to do before 11pm on September one, despite pre-season promise and the Port Vale win, and chairman Nathan Shi did not want late August trading.
