England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium sparked jubilant scenes at the Crown in Bridgnorth. It capped an emotional early-morning watch for Shropshire supporters.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the early kick-off was delayed by an hour due to inclement weather, yet a strong crowd watched on in a tense but good-natured atmosphere inside and out.
Regulars Simon Carlyon and Matt Woodward admitted nerves, citing Mexico’s home advantage and the high altitude, plus concerns over England’s preparation and defending, and even fireworks near the team hotel. Woodward kept a tradition of watching at the pub and ventured a 2-1 England win.
Martin Riggs said the altitude heightened the anxiety, though he felt the Crown was the right place to watch, where supporters routinely rally behind the team.
Ryan Lewis was more bullish, rating Mexico as average with ageing stars and inexperienced youngsters, and felt England had the quality to go all the way. After a tough watch at times, England ground out the win, prompting rapturous celebrations at full-time.
