It’s been a lively start to the tournament in Mexico, Canada and the United States

The 2026 World Cup is off and running, with an eventful opening to the tournament in North America.

These finals are the biggest ever, with 48 teams taking part for the first time and a round of 32 introduced. It’s also the first time three nations have co-hosted, with Mexico the first country to stage football’s biggest tournament three times.

France, Spain and England look like the most likely teams to triumph, but as ever the key will be who manages to keep the most star players fit.

The new faces are Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan. Curacao will become the smallest nation ever to play at the World Cup.

Matches will be hosted across 16 cities, with the final due to be held at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on July 19.
