The World Cup final in New York is not currently under threat despite a red alert for air quality and extreme heat. FIFA confirmed on Friday that Sunday’s showpiece between Spain and Argentina remains scheduled.

Kick-off is at 21:00 at MetLife Stadium, about 15 km west of Manhattan.

Thick smoke has affected the northern Midwest and parts of the north-east. On Thursday, concerns over air quality led MLS to postpone Chicago Fire’s match against Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Wildfires have been burning in Canada for several days, with smoke now reaching the north-east US and New York.

Air quality in New York was deemed unhealthy for all on Thursday. Conditions improved during Friday, although a potential deterioration was flagged for Saturday. Winds of 15 to 20 km/h are forecast on Saturday, hoped to help disperse the smoke, with speeds around 10 km/h on Sunday.
