FIFA confirmed on Thursday night that the World Cup goals record was broken when Auston Trusty put the United States ahead against Türkiye.

His opener, in the third and final round of group games, was the 173rd goal since the tournament began on 11 June, surpassing the previous mark of 172 set in 2022, with 1998 and 2014 each at 171.

Four further goals were scored in the same Türkiye v United States contest, taking the running total to 177.

The switch from 32 to 48 teams and from 64 to 104 fixtures made a new high inevitable. In 2022 there were 64 matches across the entire event. This year in Mexico, the United States and Canada there are 72 group-stage games alone.

After 60 matches, including Türkiye’s 3-2 win and the Paraguay v Australia 0-0, there have been 176 goals, an average of 2.95 per game. The 2022 edition averaged 2.68.
