Dayot Upamecano’s future at FC Bayern remains unresolved – and this has not changed even after the latest statements from sporting director Max Eberl. Nevertheless, the 52-year-old caught the eye in an interview with BILD with a subordinate clause that leaves room for interpretation and shows how realistically the record champions are now assessing the situation
Basically, Eberl made it clear that a contract extension with the French centre-back is still a central concern for Bayern. Upamecano is one of the absolute top performers under head coach Vincent Kompany, is a regular player and is hard to imagine the sport without. Eberl’s addition therefore seemed all the more surprising: „Even if the decision goes against us, we would be able to live with it.“
A sentence that sounds less like resignation and more like a sober assessment of the situation. Bayern want to extend their contract – but not at any price and not without planning security

Eberl also provided an insight into the current status of the talks. „We had very good and constructive talks with Upa’s management before Christmas. We have madewhat we believe is a very good contract offer,“ explained the sporting director. Bayern believe they have done their part and the ball is now in the player’s court
It is no secret that the decision is dragging on. Upamecano’s contract expires in the summer, but there is no acute sense of time pressure at Säbener Straße – at least officially. „The decision is now up to the player. We all wish and hope that a decision will be made soon. There is no deadline, but it would be helpful for everyone involved if a decision were made soon,“ said Eberl
These words show the area of tension in which FC Bayern are currently operating. On the one hand, they want planning security, on the other hand, they want to give the player the necessary time – a balancing act that is always tricky in transfer-free constellations
Upamecano himself has also been decidedly relaxed of late. The Frenchman declared at the start of the year: „There’s no pressure for me. We’ll talk, it’s all good.“ Statements that match his demeanour so far. The 26-year-old has not allowed himself to drift and appears to be weighing up his options carefully
For FC Bayern, this means considering various scenarios, which is precisely where Max Eberl’s subordinate clause comes into play. The statement that they could „live with it“ if the decision goes against the club indicates that alternatives have long been discussed internally – without slamming the door on an extension
Eberl’s words are emblematic of a change in tone at Säbener Straße. Less public drama, more realism. FC Bayern are courting Upamecano, acknowledging his sporting value, but at the same time signalling that they will not become dependent on him
Whether this approach will work out in the end remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the coming weeks will be decisive for Dayot Upamecano, for FC Bayern’s squad planning – and for the question of whether the „very good and constructive talks“ will actually lead to a long-term future in Munich.
