Wrexham’s Hollywood takeover mastermind steps down from club’s board | OneFootball

Humphrey Ker, the architect behind the Hollywood acquisition of Wrexham, has officially stepped down from his position on the club’s board.

The actor and comedian played a central role in introducing American film stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to the lowly Welsh team in 2021. He was appointed as Wrexham’s executive director following the takeover at the Racecourse Ground, going on to feature heavily in the successful documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Having stepped back from day-to-day involvement with the team in 2024, Ker has now relinquished his seat on the board and his role as a trustee of the Wrexham AFC Foundation.

The 43-year-old told the club website: "Working for and representing Wrexham and the wider town has been the greatest honour of my life.

"I am proud of the part I have played in the club’s remarkable journey, both on and off the field.

"The way the club has evolved and is now structured has made it progressively harder for me to make a positive contribution so, sad as I am to be leaving, I now feel watching from a distance is the right thing for me.

"I will always be a fan and wish the club, the community and supporters every success. To everyone who has made me feel so welcome, thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Paying tribute to the 6ft 7in Ker, McElhenney and Reynolds said: "Humphrey has been a key piece of the Wrexham story from day one and his kindness, humour, and height, will be missed but never forgotten."

Ker may have stepped away from Wrexham, but McElhenney and Reynolds appear to have no intention of following him after buying a famous pub adjacent to the club’s Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham's ownership described buying The Turf as a "continuation of the strategy to protect the future of the club and its interests by ring fencing key areas related to the life of the club."

Originally named the Turf Hotel, the pub holds historical importance as the site where Wrexham AFC was founded in 1864. The venue plays a central role in the TV docuseries, now in its fifth season, which has helped make Wrexham a popular club around the world.
