Xabi Alonso refuses to comment on failed Chelsea bid for Granit Xhaka | OneFootball

Xabi Alonso has addressed Chelsea’s unsuccessful pursuit of Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, choosing not to discuss the player.

According to Sunderland Echo, Chelsea explored a deal for the Switzerland international, with Xhaka understood to have been attracted by the chance to work with Alonso again after their successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland maintained throughout that their captain was not for sale, rejecting approaches. They only signed Xhaka from Leverkusen last summer in a package worth up to around £17 million and consider him central to Régis Le Bris’ squad before the club’s return to European competition.

Xhaka was initially open to talks, then reaffirmed his commitment following discussions with Sunderland. The prospect of captaining in Europe and the club’s longer-term ambitions were significant factors.

Asked about the situation, Alonso said: “Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us.” Sunderland now regard the matter as closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
