Announced on Monday by Portuguese side Alverca, Zé Rafael hit back at criticism from some Santos fans, alleging he went unpaid for several months and saying he initiated his contract termination after being left out of the club’s plans. He said he fulfilled his training and contractual duties, claimed the club did not, and added he would keep his distance without any fondness for the place.
According to Globo.com, his replies on Alverca’s social media post were later removed, and the outlet has asked Santos for comment.
Fans complained about his performances and the cost, with Santos having paid 2.5 million euros for the midfielder, as well as wages.
Santos and Zé Rafael agreed to end his deal at the end of July. His contract had been due to run until December 2027. Under the agreement, the club accepted responsibility to clear arrears, including delayed image rights, and to pay compensation that will be lower than the value of the remaining term.
He made 12 appearances this season and scored one goal. He joined last year with starter status but never established himself in the team.
