Zinedine Zidane has hailed Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet’s rapid emergence after the 21-year-old’s assured start with France. According to Goal.com, the head coach has been struck by the youngster’s maturity and discipline.

The £60 million summer signing from Rennes made his senior debut on Monday, helping a 1-0 away win against Belgium. He kept his place for Zidane’s first home match, producing another composed display in a 1-1 draw with Italy.

Michael Olise’s free-kick put France ahead before a deflected Alessandro Bastoni strike levelled. Jacquet impressed again, commanding the back line, winning four duels and completing 79 of his 80 passes.

"Very good. Very, very good," Zidane told reporters. "Brave. He wasn't afraid to come out a long way. Very good in the duels. He was, once again, very good. I said it four times!"

Jacquet said the step up has been better than he imagined, that training with elite team-mates is a pleasure, and that he is trying to savour every moment. He added that pressing high and not looking back were the coach’s instructions, and he felt no pressure.

At Liverpool he has quickly partnered Virgil van Dijk under Andoni Iraola, starting six of the opening seven matches. France host Belgium next Monday, then Liverpool welcome Premier League leaders Manchester City on October 11, when Jacquet will be tasked with quietening Erling Haaland as Iraola’s side try to be the first this season to take points off Enzo Maresca’s embattled team.
