Egyptian giants Al Ahly have turned their ongoing managerial hunt for Jose Riveiro’s successor to former Benfica head coach Bruno Lage.
The Portuguese mentor is currently unattached as he was recently axed by the Liga Portugal juggernauts after a disappointing start to the season.
Benfica fell to a shock defeat to Azerbaijani powerhouse Qarabag in the first round of the UEFA Champions League, prompting the club’s hierarchy to sack Lage.
Now, sources have confirmed the Red Devils have made contact with the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers boss over the vacant hot seat.
However, Lage is understood to be reluctant on a move to Africa at this stage, despite a desire to swiftly return to the dugout.
Ahly are said to have offered the 49-year-old tactician a contract worth € 3.5 million per season in a bid to lure him to Cairo.
Lage and his entourage are believed to be studying the offer, with no agreement between the two parties at this stage as talks recently commenced.
The well-traveled gaffer has won the league title in Portugal during the 2018/19 season, and the League Cup last season in addition to two Portuguese Super Cups, including one this campaign.
