Australia levelled against Egypt when Mohamed Hany turned into his own net. It was the 13th own goal of the 2026 World Cup, a new single-edition record ahead of 2018.

L'Équipe notes this tournament has been awash with goals, and own goals have followed suit. The match took place in the round of 32.

The previous mark was 12 at Russia 2018, which included Mario Mandzukic’s own goal in the final that France won 4-2 against Croatia.

With 104 matches scheduled, 40 more than previous editions, a rise in own goals is unsurprising.

Hany had already scored the first own goal of this World Cup against Belgium, and he has now done so again. He is only the second player to score two own goals at a World Cup, the first since Bulgarian Ivan Vutsov in 1966.
