Chelsea ‘to offer’ Belgian U21 Penders to Sunderland as Roefs fee assessed

Chelsea are weighing a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs as they test the market for a new goalkeeper. TeamTalk reports the Blues have assessed paying up to £60 million for the Netherlands Under-21 international, are unconvinced by Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, and that Liverpool and Manchester City are also monitoring him.

Jeunes Footeux claims Chelsea could offer Belgium Under-21 keeper Mike Penders to Sunderland to lower the initial fee for Roefs. Penders joined Chelsea in 2024, returned to Genk for a season, then moved on loan to Strasbourg, where he has 11 clean sheets in 41 outings, and the French club would like to keep him longer. That wish could be jeopardised if Chelsea act on Roefs in the summer window.

Roefs, 23, has excelled in his first campaign at the Stadium of Light. He kept a debut clean sheet in a 3-0 win over West Ham United and has helped Regis Le Bris’s side earn results against Newcastle United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

His form has underpinned Sunderland’s remarkable first season back in the Premier League and he is widely viewed as one of their standout signings from an ambitious summer.

Any summer move would prompt decisions at Chelsea and test Sunderland’s resolve given the attention around the goalkeeper.
