Crystal Palace are considering a surprise move to bring Conor Gallagher back to Selhurst Park.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Eagles are exploring the possibility of re-signing the England international on loan, although talks are still at an early stage.
Palace are under enormous pressure to bolster their attack after losing Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
Manager Oliver Glasner has already made it clear that bringing in the right replacement for Eze is paramount if the club are to be competitive this season.
Palace are set to compete in the Europa Conference League this season. They’ll need all the firepower they can muster if they plan to make a deep run in the competition.
Gallagher could be on the move this summer, and a return to Palace may be appealing, considering how his previous loan spell panned out.
During his loan spell at Palace, he featured 34 times in the Premier League, bagging eight goals and three assists.
His energy and versatility in the middle of the park made him a fan favourite. While he doesn’t have the creative ability to replace Eze, the Palace faithful will welcome his return with open arms.
The 25-year-old wasted no time establishing himself in Diego Simeone’s first team squad at Atletico following his £36m move from Chelsea.
He was in fantastic form for the Spanish giants last season, notching four goals and six assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.
However, he has fallen down the pecking order this season. He has only managed 67 minutes of action across Atletico’s opening two games, with new arrival Johnny Cardoso preferred in midfield.
Gallagher is open to returning to the Premier League. If Palace can agree a deal, he’d be a fantastic addition for Glasner’s side.
However, they would still need to sign a creative midfielder. Bilal El Khannouss ticks that box, but Palace have yet to make any concrete move for the Leicester City star.
