Sheffield Wednesday have named Simon Wilson as sporting director following relegation from the Championship, the club confirmed.
He arrives after leaving Stockport County at the end of last season, having overseen their climb from the National League to League One. He initially joined as director of football, later becoming chief executive. Stockport reached last month’s League One play-off final, losing to Bolton Wanderers.
At Hillsborough he takes a newly created position. His experience spans Manchester City, Sunderland, Southampton, Leicester City, Sparta Prague and Ajax.
Wilson described Wednesday as a historic club with a unique identity and a passionate fanbase. He said success will require patience, consistency and alignment, not quick fixes. He aims to reflect the energy of Hillsborough and the supporters in the team, the way they play and the culture.
Chief executive David Bruce called the appointment an important moment, stressing the club are building for the future. He praised Wilson’s strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and operational leadership, noting experience at respected organisations. Bruce said the move underlines a drive to modernise, strengthen the football structure and create a platform for long-term success.
