Erling Haaland’s evening at the Stade Louis II was marked by highs and lows. The Manchester City forward netted a brace on what was his 50th UEFA Champions League appearance, however, his side were pegged back in the dying moments by AS Monaco, who secured a 2-2 draw to get their first points on the board in this year’s campaign.
Haaland’s first came inside the opening 20 minutes as he latched onto a Josko Gvardiol ball and chipped Philipp Kohn. His second came on the stroke of half-time as he outjumped Mohammed Salisu to power a header past Kohn.
However, he was periperhal most of the game, making just 17 touches, seven of which came in the first-half, and two of them converted into goals. Post-match, however, the Norway international was not in the mood to reflect on personal milestones, instead voicing his frustration about the result.
“I’m p*ssed off; I think everyone should be. It’s not good enough,” he told BBC Sport in his post-match interview. With 52 goals, he needs seven more this season in order to level Lionel Messi’s record of 59 Champions League goals before the age of 26
