Habib Beye was appointed Olympique de Marseille head coach on Wednesday night, replacing Roberto De Zerbi, according to Le Progres.

Beye, who played for OM from 2003 to 2007, arrives soon after his dismissal by Stade Rennais. His name surfaced quickly following last week’s split with De Zerbi.

Marseille’s 2026 has been strewn with setbacks, though they remain five points off Lyon in third.

They had been without a head coach since De Zerbi departed a week ago, with Jacques Abardonado taking interim charge for Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Strasbourg. The club visit Brest on Friday. They will play a Coupe de France quarter-final against Toulouse on 4 March.

The appointment appears to widen the rift between president Pablo Longoria, not necessarily keen on Beye’s profile, and the rest of the club.

Beye, 48, will be presented to the media on Thursday at 14:15. His arrival followed the formalisation of his sacking by Rennes after a failed conciliation attempt before the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s legal commission. Rennes have already named Franck Haise as head coach on Wednesday.
