The Portuguese midfielder was one of several high-profile departures from St Mary's this summer
Following the second-worst campaign in the 33-year history of the Premier League, a major squad overhaul was conducted at Southampton after Will Still's appointment back in May.
After regaining their top-flight status under Russell Martin by defeating Leeds United in the Championship play-off final back in May 2024, the Saints returned to the EFL with the biggest of whimpers, only emerging victorious in two out of their 38 league encounters — accumulating a measly 12 points under Martin, Ivan Juric and interim boss, Simon Rusk in the process.
Yet, much like Ipswich Town and Leicester City — who also returned to the second-tier immediately — the South Coast club boasted several performers who would argue that their current and future potential ceilings are worthy of featuring in a division of higher overall standard than England's second-tier.
As is so often the case, several high-profile names and big earners would leave the Hampshire club in the off-season and throughout the summer transfer window, such as Aaron Ramsdale, Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Paul Onuachu, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Armel Bella-Kotchap and highly-rated teenager Tyler Dibling, who moved to Everton in the latter stages of the window.
Whilst still being able to retain several players who are seasoned campaigners at Championship level and beyond, Still and Saints supporters were dealt another frustrating blow as the window drew to a close, as one of their main beacons of light last season, Mateus Fernandes, also returned to the top-flight, joining West Ham United in a deal reportedly worth up to £41m.
With that being said, Football League World have looked at how much more money the Portuguese playmaker is now making at the London Stadium compared to his one season at St Mary's.
Fernandes was signed during the aforementioned Martin's final transfer window on the South Coast, joining from Portuguese giants, Sporting CP in a £15m deal, penning a five-year contract in the process.
Overall, the man who impressed massively during the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in Slovakia in the summer made 36 top-flight appearances for the Saints, scoring twice and posting a further four assists, as one of their standout performers in a season which proved difficult for more than a handful of players to emerge with real credibility.
During his first campaign in English football as a whole, Capology — a site which ESTIMATES player earnings and club payrolls — believes that the 21-year-old picked up a weekly wage of £20,000 per week, which equated to a figure of £1,040,000 throughout the entirety of the 2024/25 season.
This was enough to see him on a par with Walker-Peters and Ross Stewart, although Fernandes was still some way off the remarkable £120,000 earned by the aforementioned Ramsdale on a weekly basis.
Unlike some of his peers, the Olhao-born midfielder still made four appearances under Still prior to his move, with his final goal for the club coming in the EFL Cup First Round success over Northampton Town in mid-August.
Fernandes' move to East London has come during a period of intense pressure and scrutiny for Irons boss, Graham Potter, who is still yet to convince the masses at the London Stadium amid fan discontent towards the club's owners.
However, in making his eight-figure switch to the Hammers, the midfielder has since tripled his salary according to Capology ESTIMATES, as he is now believed to be collecting a weekly pay packet of £60,000 per week.
This will see Fernandes collect an overall sum of £3,120,000 across the top-flight campaign which West Ham have started in extremely underwhelming fashion, as he looks to make an impact with his high potential and well-documented technical ability.
Ironically, on United's overall payroll, Fernandes is now believed to be earning £5,000 per week more than Walker-Peters after their previous spell as equals on Dragan Šolak's wage bill at Southampton.
