Inter Milan are keeping tabs on Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret as a potential free transfer opportunity for next summer.
This according to the director of Italian outlet Radio Kiss Kiss, Valter De Napoli. He stated on air, via FCInter1908, that Nerazzurri President Beppe Marotta is following the 27-year-old’s contract situation.
Meret is currently under contract with Napoli until the end of next June.
The Italian international’s deal had actually been set to run out at the end of June of this year. However, Napoli had an option to extend his deal by one season.
Therefore, the Partenopei avoided the possibility of losing Meret on a free transfer during the summer transfer window.
However, the option to extend Meret’s contract only kicked the can down the road by twelve months.
The 27-year-old’s deal still expires at the end of next June.
Therefore, Meret could leave on a free transfer at the end of the current season.
Naturally, Napoli are aiming to extend Meret’s contract once again.
The Campanian team are hardly keen on the idea of losing the goalkeeper on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
However, Napoli have to negotiate with Meret and his entourage. They decided to follow this course rather than aiming to sell him during the summer transfer window.
And so far, the negotiations have not resulted in an agreement.
Therefore, there is still a possibility that Meret could depart for nothing at the end of the season.
And according to Radio Kiss Kiss director De Napoli, Inter President Beppe Marotta is following the situation closely.
It is no secret that Inter President Marotta is a big fan of the free transfer strategy.
And Italian international keeper Meret could certainly constitute a major opportunity on a free transfer.
Inter did sign goalkeeper Josep Martinez during the summer transfer window from Genoa. However, the Spaniard has yet to make an appearance for the Nerazzurri.
