Isco Alarcón, one of Spain’s most gifted midfielders of recent years, owns five European Cups with Real Madrid and is now a Betis linchpin set for a Champions League return.
He joined Valencia’s academy at 14, debuting for the first team in November 2010 with a sparkling Copa display against Logroés, scoring twice, then making his La Liga bow days later against Getafe. According to La Banqueta, FFCV president Salva Gomar later recounted an exchange between Unai Emery and president Manuel Llorente over the teenager’s minutes.
Valencia were chasing the top places and Unai Emery was in charge. Expectations at Mestalla were high, with president Manuel Llorente demanding top-four finishes to secure Champions League income.
Isco was 18 and the crowd had fallen for him, yet Emery used him sparingly. In that account, Emery told Llorente his renewal depended on Champions League qualification, asked whether he wanted Isco or the Champions League, and insisted he would pick the team, while acknowledging Isco’s talent.
Málaga, with Al Thani at the helm, then triggered the six million euro release clause to sign the Málaga-born playmaker. It was a gamble given his limited top-flight minutes, one that proved justified.
