Jan Paul van Hecke is set to join Tottenham after Brighton agreed a £52million deal for the Dutch defender. He is expected to reunite in north London with former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 26-year-old has 12 months left on his contract and had shown no desire to extend. Brighton rejected one offer for the centre-back, then accepted Tottenham’s proposal, which includes a significant sell-on clause.

The former Sunderland loan target was linked earlier in his Brighton career but stayed put and established himself as a reliable performer. He joined from NAC Breda in 2020 and made 131 appearances for the Seagulls.

Last season he started 36 of Brighton’s 38 Premier League matches as Fabian Hurzeler’s side finished eighth and secured European qualification for only the second time in the club’s history.

Van Hecke also started for the Netherlands in their 2-2 draw with Japan at the World Cup on Sunday, underlining his growing international standing.

His impending switch continues Brighton’s knack for developing talent and selling at a profit. Spurs have already reinforced heavily this summer as they look to improve after successive 17th-placed finishes.
