RTI Esporte reports that Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal in principle with Wolves to sign Joao Gomes. A fee of £39m (€45m) has been set, with work being finalised for completion when the transfer window reopens next month.
He looks set to be Wolves’ first summer departure following relegation from the Premier League. Having cost about £15m in January 2023, the sale would deliver a healthy profit.
The price is perhaps below his true market value, but relegation means the club have had to accept less than ideal. He is set to become the club’s eighth-biggest sale, behind Matheus Cunha, Matheus Nunes, Pedro Neto, Ruben Neves, Jorgen Strand Larsen, Max Kilman and Diogo Jota.
Gomes arrived from Flamengo in January 2023 and quickly endeared himself to supporters. He effectively replaced Ruben Neves and took the Portuguese midfielder’s old number eight shirt.
Across difficult spells in recent seasons he has carried himself superbly and consistently played for the badge. While not leaving with Neves-level cult status, he remains adored and appreciated by the vast majority of fans. He ranks among Wolves’ better recent signings under Fosun.
