Leeds United moved closer to Premier League safety with a 3-1 home victory over Burnley.
yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk highlights the controlled, front-foot start after the FA Cup semi-final disappointment at Wembley.
Anton Stach struck early, Noah Okafor volleyed in on 52 minutes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin added a third from close range before Loum Tchaouna replied for the visitors. Leeds then managed the closing stages with minimal alarm.
Stach’s long-range threat remains a major weapon. He has scored four Premier League goals from outside the box this season, level with Dominic Szoboszlai and Antoine Semenyo at the top, and the 6ft 4ins German is surely staking his claim for Player of the Season.
Starting fast has been a theme. This was Leeds’ 24th first-half effort of the league campaign, a figure bettered only by Arsenal and Manchester City, and a 1-0 interval lead would place them sixth in a first-half-only table.
The result left them nine points clear of 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur and lifted them above Newcastle United into 14th, level with Crystal Palace and three behind Sunderland in 12th. Chairman Paraag Marathe said in the summer that anything above 18th would be ‘gravy’, but there is still ground to make and prize money to gain. Stach said the final three matches are important, that the mood is good, and with the fans behind them he hopes they can take more wins.
