Leeds United’s 3-1 defeat of Burnley under the Elland Road lights prompted a fresh Opta forecast and sharpened the survival picture.
Leeds began the weekend 15th, six points clear of third-bottom Tottenham Hotspur, and faced already-relegated Burnley. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Opta have refreshed their predicted final Premier League table and points following the result.
Burnley set up with a back five. Anton Stach struck in the first half, with Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin adding goals after the break eight minutes apart to seal the result.
Leeds moved to 43 points and climbed above Newcastle United, who are one point behind with a game in hand. The cushion to the bottom three is now nine points, with Spurs third-bottom and only four matches left starting with Sunday night’s trip to Aston Villa.
They are seven points clear of fourth-bottom West Ham, who visit Brentford on Saturday afternoon, and four ahead of fifth-bottom Nottingham Forest, who go to Chelsea on Bank Holiday Monday.
Opta’s latest projections place Arsenal top on 82 points, three clear of Manchester City on 79. Manchester United are forecast third with 67, Aston Villa fourth on 64, Liverpool fifth on 64 and Brighton sixth on 55.
