Leeds United took a major step towards Premier League safety with a 3-1 win over Burnley, moving nine points clear of 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Anton Stach struck inside eight minutes from 25 yards, then after the break Noah Okafor volleyed in on 52 and Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it 3-0 before Loum Tchaouna replied. yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk highlights three takeaways from the night.
Stach’s long-range quality settled early nerves. He controlled a Jaka Bijol pass and lashed a left-footer inside Martin Dubravka’s near post. It was his fourth Premier League goal from outside the box this season, with no player scoring more, Dominic Szoboszlai and Antoine Semenyo are level.
Leeds were intent on starting fast after last week’s sluggish Wembley opening. That opener made it their 24th first-half effort of the league season, bettered only by Arsenal and Manchester City, and those starts have energised Elland Road.
They are virtually safe but cannot ease off. The win also lifted them above Newcastle United into 14th, level with Crystal Palace and three behind Sunderland in 12th.
Chairman Paraag Marathe said in the summer that anything above 18th would be gravy. With survival close, Leeds can look up over the final three matches, and each place brings extra competition revenue.
Post-match, Stach said the last three games are important, the team are in good spirits and, with the fans behind them, they hope to add more wins.
