Lazio are reportedly on the cusp of striking an accord with Dinamo Zagreb for the transfer of Sergi Dominguez.
In recent days, the Biancocelesti accepted AC Milan’s €30 million offer for Mario Gila. The 25-year-old isn’t the only defensive protagonist to leave Formello this summer, as Ivan Provedel has already completed his transfer to Inter Milan, while Alessio Romagnoli landed in Doha to sign for Al-Sadd.
Therefore, Lazio need at least one new centre-back to join Oliver Provstgaard, Patric, and Samuel Gigot in Gennaro Gattuso’s squad. Over the past few weeks, Dominguez emerged as the club’s top target, especially following his exploits in his first campaign at Dinamo Zagreb, where he helped the club clinch the domestic double.
On Thursday morning, Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani was spotted in Split. The Italian official arrived in the Croatian city for direct talks with Dinamo Zagreb officials. The first day of discussions was apparently fruitful, as Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reveals that the two parties are ‘very close’ to reaching an agreement for the defender, who is valued at €12 million.
This could be a fair figure, as the Croatian champions were initially hoping to collect €15 million, while Lazio were only offering €10 million. If everything goes according to plan, Dominguez will arrive in the Italian capital in the coming days to replace Gila.
Similar to his compatriot, the 21-year-old was born in Barcelona. But while Gila rose through the ranks of Real Madrid, Dominguez is a product of Barca’s famous La Masia academy. This season, he made 41 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his attacking prowess as well by scoring two goals and providing his teammates with four assists.
