Elland Road marked Leeds United’s 0-0 draw with Brentford with an emotional remembrance of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight. Football felt secondary as the annual tribute framed a flat contest.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, supporters gathered alongside family representatives outside the East Stand, where chairman Paraag Marathe and CEO Robbie Evans laid wreaths.
Before kick-off, Brentford’s squad and staff formed a huddle and worked in a back five during the warm-up, while Stuart Dallas joined Marathe pitchside. Inside, thunderous applause preceded the players and officials paying their respects, then the traditional mass turning of backs, and Ethan Ampadu and Nathan Collins laying wreaths in front of the West Stand.
For neutrals it was hard viewing, a stop-start contest dominated by set pieces and aerial battles, with in-game huddles resembling tactical timeouts that many would like the authorities to outlaw.
Brenden Aaronson endured a bad night, repeatedly running into red-and-white traffic and seeing little come off. The break might help him reset, or Daniel Farke may decide a brief rest and fresh legs are needed. Farke’s fury after one aimless hoof downfield underlined the frustration.
Willy Gnonto stayed unused despite Leeds leaning on crosses and a game that needed unpredictability. He will not join up with Italy during the break and, while his season could yet spark, he remains on the periphery for now.
