Sunderland loanee Luís Hemir Semedo was left on the bench for Moreirense’s 3-1 defeat at FC Porto after what head coach Vasco Botelho later described as a disciplinary issue. He also did not take part in the warm-up.

According to A Bola, the call was not purely tactical, and followed behaviour before the trip to the Estádio do Dragão that the club deemed inappropriate. It was not judged serious enough to omit him from the squad, but the staff felt a consequence was required.

The 22-year-old had shown signs of progress, scoring against Nacional in the Primeira Liga earlier this month after a stop-start spell.

Botelho said the decision was about Semedo’s development, noting a long-standing relationship and affection for the player, while stressing the team comes before the individual and that tough choices can help growth.

Semedo joined Moreirense on loan last August and remains under contract with Sunderland until June 2028 after a mixed season with Juventus Next Gen, where minutes were limited.

He has two goals and one assist in 15 league appearances, totalling 717 minutes. His next chance could arrive against Arouca on Saturday, with injuries offering a route back into the starting line-up if he responds positively.
