Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph has issued an emotional update after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury on loan at Real Mallorca, cutting short his season.

He returned to his native Spain in the summer on a season-long deal after expressing a desire to leave Elland Road, though Leeds were not minded to sell permanently. The player said in a post that he had to stop, acknowledging how everything changes when injury strikes, that he has lost the routine that defines him, and that he must be patient, trust the process and accept there will be good and bad days.

The 22-year-old thanked supporters, said he would be back, and vowed to return better in ways not always visible.

His final outing for Mallorca was a famous win over Real Madrid, in which he supplied the winner. After news of his injury, team-mates and home fans showed their backing, singing his name following a 3-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Ex-Leeds captain Liam Cooper, last season's promotion winner Josuha Guilavogui and fellow outgoing loanees Largie Ramazani and Joe Gelhardt were among those to respond to Joseph's message.
