Max Wober leaves Leeds as Schalke back defender to rediscover best form | OneFootball

Max Wober has left Leeds United by mutual consent and joined Schalke on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, confirmation arrived on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old had been under contract at Elland Road until 2027, but player and club agreed to end those terms early, helped in part by a sell-on clause from his £10m move from RB Salzburg in 2023.

Wober made 28 appearances for Leeds and spent two seasons out on loan. His first temporary exit followed a relegation release clause being triggered in 2023, with spells at Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen bringing a combined 27 league games. Last season at Bremen yielded only three appearances after a serious knee injury on debut.

Schalke director of football Youri Mulder cited Wober’s 170-plus top-flight outings and Bundesliga know-how from Mönchengladbach and Bremen. “We are convinced that he will be able to rediscover his best form with us,” he said, adding that the staff, alongside Miron Muslic, will work closely with him and value his defensive versatility.

Schalke have returned to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second tier and count major honours, including the 1996/97 UEFA Cup. Wober called the switch an exciting challenge and said he aims to settle quickly and get to know his new team-mates.
