Max Wober leaves Leeds as Schalke back him to find best form | OneFootball

Max Wober has left Leeds United by mutual consent and joined Schalke on a free, with the German club confident he can regain his best form next season.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 28-year-old signed a one-year deal on Wednesday night at the Veltins Arena. He had been contracted at Leeds until 2027, but both parties ended those terms early, a move shaped in part by a sell-on clause from his £10m switch from RB Salzburg in 2023.

Wober made only 28 appearances for Leeds, spending two seasons out on loan. The first, triggered by a relegation release clause in 2023, took him to Borussia Monchengladbach, followed by Werder Bremen, where a knee injury on debut limited him to three games.

Schalke director of football Youri Mulder highlighted Wober’s more than 170 top-flight appearances and his familiarity with the Bundesliga. He said the club are convinced he can rediscover top form, that Miron Muslic and the coaching team will work closely with him, and that his versatility suits several defensive shapes.

Schalke have been in Germany’s second tier for the past three seasons and have just been promoted. Wober described the opportunity as exciting after positive talks, said he is eager for the challenge of playing for a special club, and aims to settle quickly and get to know his new team-mates.
