Max Wober leaves Leeds for Schalke as club back him to regain best form | OneFootball

Max Wober has left Leeds United by mutual consent and joined Schalke on a free, with the German club confident he can recapture his best next season. The 28-year-old signed a one-year contract on Wednesday.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the defender had been tied to Leeds until 2027 but the parties agreed to end those terms early, helped in part by a sell-on clause from his £10m arrival from RB Salzburg in 2023.

His time at Elland Road proved underwhelming, with only 28 appearances for his parent club and two seasons spent on loan. A switch to Werder Bremen last year yielded just three games after a serious knee injury on debut.

Schalke director of football Youri Mulder said they are convinced Wober can rediscover top form, citing his more than 170 top-flight outings and Bundesliga experience. He added that Wober’s attributes offer defensive flexibility and that staff, including Miron Muslic, will work closely with him.

The move continues Wober’s Bundesliga connection, following loans at Mönchengladbach and Bremen that brought a combined 27 league appearances. Schalke have returned to the top flight after three years in the second tier and count major honours, including the 1996/97 UEFA Cup.

Wober called Schalke an exciting opportunity and said he is looking forward to a new challenge at a very special club that were deservedly promoted. He added that he wants to settle quickly and get to know his new team-mates.
