Newcastle United want to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, following Nick Pope’s struggles this season.
Pope has made four errors that have led to goals across all competitions. Back-up goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is on loan from Southampton, has also been unconvincing.
The Telegraph claims that Newcastle have shortlisted Manchester City’s James Trafford, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Bart Verbruggen, and Lens’ Robin Risser as potential targets.
However, the Magpies are still exploring several other options before deciding on their priority target.
Newcastle had agreed a fee to sign Trafford last summer, but City exercised their matching rights, having inserted a buy-back clause when he joined Burnley.
The England international has played second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma and could now be open to leaving City.
Trafford is also a ‘dream target‘ for Brighton, while Juventus, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are considering a move for him.
Vertbuggen is another goalie under consideration, but it is unclear whether he would be open to a move to Tyneside.
Newcastle have followed him closely and have been ‘impressed with his command of the area and his shot-stopping ability’.
They have also been watching Risser all season, but reports that they had agreed a fee for him have been dismissed.
The Frenchman is a good shot-stopper and is comfortable with the ball at his feet, making him an attractive target.
Newcastle are ready to give him time to acclimatise, with Pope serving as the first choice during that period.
