UEFA have announced that the Executive Committee will delay a decision on playing the Serie A match AC Milan vs. Como in Australia until it has undertaken ‘a round of consultation.’

The matter had been put to the Executive Committee ahead of today’s meeting in Tirana, Albania.

The proposal to play a league match abroad was not just from Serie A, but also LaLiga, who wanted the fixture between Barcelona and Villarreal to be moved to Miami, Florida.

These would be historic events, the first time the top five European leagues had some of their domestic games played outside their territory, and even outside of Europe.

“The Executive Committee discussed the requests from the RFEF and FIGC to approve the playing of one domestic league match each outside the home country, in particular outside the UEFA territory,” read a statement.

“The committee acknowledged it as an important and growing issue but expressed the desire to ensure that it has the views of all stakeholders before coming to a final decision.

“There are many issues to resolve and as the European governing body, UEFA has a responsibility to take all such factors into account.

“As a result, no decision was taken today but UEFA will undertake a round of consultation with all stakeholders in European football – including fans.”

It is not clear how long this process will take, nor what the result at the end of it will be, as the Lega Serie A and LaLiga are forced to wait and see.

Milan vs. Como cannot be played at San Siro in February 2026 due to the stadium being used for the opening ceremony of the Milano-Cortina games.
