Lega Serie A President Ezio Maria Simonelli is ‘confident’ that UEFA will allow Milan and Como to play a Serie A game in Australia in February 2026: ‘It’s a necessity, not a whim.’

The UEFA Executive Committee is expected to discuss Milan and Como’s request to stage their Serie A meeting in February in Perth, Australia.

It’s technically a home fixture for the Rossoneri, but with the Stadio Meazza occupied by preparations for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games, the Serie A giants can’t use their home stadium.

Speaking at an event organised by Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday, Lega Serie A President Simonelli said he was confident UEFA would give the green light today.

“There’s a UEFA meeting today, and I don’t know if the decision will come today,” Simonelli said via TMW.

“I pointed out that for us this is a necessity rather than a whim, given that San Siro will be unavailable due to the Olympics. The fixture list is packed, and we don’t have any stadiums near Milan with the same capacity as San Siro. Faced with this need, and having received a proposal from Australia, we asked for the opportunity. I’m waiting for UEFA’s response, and I’m confident, as always.”

It is not guaranteed that the UEFA Committee will come up with a decision today, as they could even postpone the verdict to a later date.

In the meantime, Serie A will resume this weekend after the international break, seeing Milan and Como hosting Bologna and Genoa, respectively.
