Brian Brobbey’s last-minute winner at St James Park sealed a Tyne-Wear derby double. Sunderland Echo notes that Opta’s model projects the Black Cats to finish 12th on 51.15 points.
Sunderland had trailed early, Anthony Gordon punishing a Luke O’Nien header to put Newcastle in front inside the opening 10 minutes.
Chemsdine Talbi levelled just before the hour from close range, unsettling the hosts. Sunderland pressed for a decisive blow, stretching their unbeaten derby run to an 11th game.
That moment arrived in the final minute, Brobbey beating Aaron Ramsdale at the second attempt to ignite wild scenes in the away end. The result left Sunderland 11th, three points off the European places heading into the international break.
Opta’s projections have Arsenal top on 84.77 points, with Manchester City on 74.45, Manchester United on 66.06 and Aston Villa on 65.04. Around Sunderland, Newcastle are projected 10th on 52.03, Fulham 11th on 51.92, Sunderland 12th on 51.15 and Bournemouth 13th on 50.88.
Head coach Regis Le Bris called it a big achievement and a tough game, noting an early mistake but praising the reaction. He felt the interval helped realign the team, the second half showed their intentions, and the win means a lot as they aim to keep improving.
